This is just a reminder that healthcare providers must begin using the National Provider Identifier (NPI), a unique 10-digit identification number, by May 23, 2007.
The NPI was mandated as part of the Administrative Simplifications portion of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and will be used for billing Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance.
Once assigned, a provider's NPI is permanent and remains with the provider regardless or job or location changes.

Will there be a web site we can go to and obtain the doctor's NPI numbers like there is for the UPIN? Thank you for this information.

Catherine -
The official word on this from the CMS web site is that they are working on a plan to disseminate the numbers, but cannot answer any questions about the plan at this time.
So at this point it looks like your best bet is to contact physicians directly, but hopefully a better system will be in place soon.
Thanks for asking!

I work at a small family owned pharmacy. We fill prescriptions from approximately 100 mile radius,Re:specialists, as well as local physicians. I would appreciate a single website where we could obtain all NPI numbers so that our small pharmacy would not have to contact each individual physician.
Thanks!

When is it mandatory to use the new CMS 1500 forms?
Posted by: SW | April 03, 2007 at 01:29 PM
The implementation date for the CMS 1500 was to have been April 1, 2007. However, due to formatting errors in some of the documents, the new target date is June 1, 2007. I found some additional information here:

Hope that helps.

I need to report to the United Network of Organ Sharing on transplant patients. Have they come out with an NPI website yet?

Recently I came across one website which acts as resource for getting more information on many regulatory compliance authorities like HIPAA, SOX, OSHA, etc. This website clearly demonstrates all the latest happening about many of these authorities like news, webinars, conferences, product and services, etc http://www.compliancehome.com/topics/HIPAA/
