Per JCAHO E-mail dated June 1, 2005:

Correction:  In the May 2005 issue of JCAHOnline, an article introduced revisions to Leadership standard LD.3.70. The standard, effective January 1, 2006, addresses an organization’s responsibilities for individuals not employed by the organization who are providing services in the organization under the direct responsibility of a licensed independent practitioner. While the article listed a number of recommendations that clearly reflect best practice endeavors for any facility that allows non-employee individuals to provide care, treatment or services, these recommendations were beyond the actual requirement of the revised standard. The new LD.3.70 elements of performance (EPs) only require organizations to evaluate the qualifications and current competence of these individuals. Therefore, of the nine recommendations listed, only the first two (appropriately credentialed and competent) are actually required.

Revised Standard Addresses LIP Responsibility

Revisions made to Leadership standard LD.3.70 address an organization’s responsibilities for individuals not employed by the organization who are providing services in the organization under the direct responsibility of a licensed independent practitioner (LIP). The standard, effective January 1, 2006, requires that the organization determine if these individuals are:

  • Appropriately credentialed. Competent. Providing care under the direct supervision of or collaborating with a LIP. Functioning within his or her licensed scope of practice, as allowed by the organization. Operating under the organization’s policies and procedures. Oriented to the organization’s emergency evacuation procedures. Current with respect to relevant health screening. Displaying appropriate identification at all times. Appropriately screened with respect to any criminal background.

These standard revisions were developed with assistance from the Hospital Professional and Technical Advisory Committee, and the proposed revised standard underwent field review. (Contact: Bob Wise, rwise@jcaho.org)
