MN Blue Cross Releases Hospital Tier Rankings
Minnesotans may be surprised to learn that some of the state’s best-known hospitals have not made the cut as preferred providers for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota.
The tier rankings, which will be officially released by Blue Cross next week, are part of an attempt to steer Blue Cross members to less-expensive facilities, called Tier I hospitals.
Starting Jan. 1, 2006, some Blue Cross members who go to Tier II hospitals will incur double the usual co-insurance. All told, 52 Minnesota hospitals are in Tier I and 16 in Tier II.
Blue Cross says that quality criteria play a role in the rankings but that cost is the key driver.
